Handbook

Attendance

Students may not arrive before 7:30 am. Please make sure your student is in line ready to go to class by 7:40 AM. Tardies and absences add up quickly in lost instructional time. If your child is tardy (arriving after the 2nd bell), a parent/guardian will need to sign him/her in at the front office.

To report an absence, call our attendance line at 897–5174 and then press 2. Use this line to report all absences, whether the absences are due to illness, emergencies, or appointments. Then, on the next day at school, please provide the clerk with a copy of a doctor's (or other) note stating the reason for the absence. Any student who is absent without a call from the family will be counted as an unexcused absence.

Please try to schedule appointments on Wednesday afternoons or as late in the day as possible to limit absences, early releases, or late arrivals. If you do have an appointment, please ask the doctor for a note for school to bring the next school day.

Signing students out at the end of the day does pose a disruption to the classroom as teachers are finishing with end of day instructions.  If you need to pick up your child during the school day, please arrive before 1:20 pm as we avoid releasing students the last 30 minutes of the day.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

Cell phones

We highly recommend that cell phones not be brought to school. If for some reason you need to send one to school with your child(ren), the following will be enforced:

  • Cell phone must be kept in the student’s backpack at all times during instructional hours.
  • Cell phone must be turned off during instructional hours (7:40 – 1:50) including after-school activities.
  • If a student is seen using or sharing the phone with another student, it will be taken from the student by an administrator and kept in the office. The phone may be picked up by the parent/guardian.

Dress code

The Board of Education expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of personal conduct so that each student’s attire promotes a positive, safe and healthy atmosphere within the school.

Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard or potential disruption to the instructional program. Attire or accessories that advertise and/or promote any drug, including alcohol or tobacco, violence, disrespect and/or bigotry towards any group are not acceptable.

As a matter of common courtesy and respect, hats are not to be worn while inside buildings except when there are specific instructional, safety, and/or medical reasons. Due to safety concerns, students may not wear flip-flops to school.

On your child’s PE day, it is best to wear appropriate shoes so that they may participate fully.

Drop-off & Pick-up

Campus

If you drive your child(ren) to school and you want to park in the parking lot and walk them in, you must head west on Homestead and make a right hand turn into the parking lot. From there you will park and walk your child(ren) to the building. Do not forget to cross with the staff crossing guard.

If you drive your child(ren) to school and you want to pull through to the parent drop off, you must go west on Homestead, make a right-hand turn and wait in line to pull up in front of the school to drop off your child(ren). You may not make a double right hand turn into the school.

Pull forward until a duty staff asks you to stop. You may let your child(ren) out of your car once you have completely passed the access road to the back of the school. In order to honor everyone’s limited time, please have your child(ren) ready to exit your vehicle as quickly as possible.

Exiting Campus

You may make a left or right hand turn when exiting the parking lot.

No Parking

There is no parking at all on Homestead due to the bike lanes. The staff parking lot is for staff only. Families may not park there to drop off or pick up students. When we have special school events we can obtain permission from the city to allow parking on Homestead to accommodate all of our families.

Traffic patterns are enforced from 8:00 am to 8:45 am in the morning and from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm in the afternoon.
